WASHINGTON, Oct 20 (Reuters) – Two top U.S. lawmakers urged President George W. Bush on Monday to appoint Federal Deposit Insurance Corp Chairman Sheila Bair to supervise a government-wide effort to reduce foreclosures.
Rep. Barney Frank, a Massachusetts Democrat who chairs the House Financial Services Committee, and Rep. Maxine Waters, a California Democrat, said in a letter that Bair would be ideal to coordinate the effort to mitigate foreclosures.
“Giving one official clear responsibility, particularly one as knowledgeable on the subject as Chairman Bair, will improve the effectiveness of the efforts of the federal government at a time when prompt and efficient action is most urgently needed,” the letter said.
FDIC spokesman Andrew Gray said Bair shares Congress and the administration’s commitment to tackling housing woes.
“The key to addressing our current economic situation remains avoiding preventable foreclosures and pursuing sustainable loan modifications for troubled borrowers to keep them in their homes,” he said.
Frank and Waters wrote Bush that the government has new powers to stabilize the housing market because of its takeover of mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and recent legislation.
They also note the $700 billion market rescue plan passed on Oct. 3, has language requiring the administration to protect homeowners.
“Certainly the government’s role will necessarily differ in regard to mortgages the government actually owns or controls and others that remain in pools backing securities in the private market,” the letter said. “The combination of tools available, however, allows us to have a substantial impact on the foreclosure crisis that continues to undercut economic recovery.

Short Sale Assistance needed
We were consistent on paying the mortgage until February of 2008. We moved due to our job transfer and ill parent. We rented the property to tenants, this was managed by a rental management company, the tenants have not paid any rent since February 2008, this is when my husband lost his job. Due to all this we have been unable to pay our mortgage and due to an adjustable rate that kept adjusting up to $3200. Countrywide is foreclosing is our company. We contacted them and asked to do a short sale but we have not been successful with our Realtor, tenants and keeping the house out of foreclosure.

March 17, 2008 I began the process of applying for the Loan Modification with Ocwen Mortgage Company. I sent all the required documents and failed to include the listing agreement, initially. After several conversations in which the Company stated that various documents had not been received, I responded immediately with faxes to cover the requirements, including the listing agreement. No action was ever taken to move the documents along to a decision-maker. My last conversation with the Company’s liquidation department informed me that the property was scheduled for a Sheriff’s sale on June 12, 2008.
The clerk stated that my package was incomplete, since there was no listing agreement and there was no request to participate in the program and there was no hardship letter. I was outraged and before the call was terminated, she stated that she found all of the documents, but since the information is now 90 days old, I would not be accepted. I pointed out that this process was started in a timely fashion and that no one ever gave me that excuse before. She put me on hold and then returned. She asked me what was the date on the listing agreement. I read the dates on the agreement. The expiration of the agreement was May 31, 2008 with a month to month extension, thereafter. She stated that she could not read the wrting regarding the extension, so as far as she was concerned the Listing Agreement had expired. My only option was to go to foreclosure and attempt to redeem the property after ten (10) days. I was and remain flabbergasted!
The Mortgage Company is still Ocwen is foreclosing.

Mortgage companies work on their time lines and really do not care about their customers. Once you submit your package they really leave you hanging and it can take months before they send a denial letter. There are many lenders that send information looking like they want to help but cut your legs out from under you and take your home. no payments have been made since January. My fiancee had his hours cutback and my mother was going through chemo and radiation treatments for cancer. What little we had went to help them out and to keep food on our table. He has solid employment now making 1100.00 gross per week. We can and would like to pay weekly to clear the back payments and make all future payments weekly. If it would help to be married we can do so in 3 days or we can just quick claim him onto the deed. He just had a bankruptcy clear (all payments made) and is waiting on all creditors to send letters to his attorney stating that all payments have been made. we really need foreclosure help with Wachovia Mortgage. stop foreclosure help.
Our advice is not to get married to save a home get married for love besides most mortgage companies will take a contribution letter stating the amount of income that is being contributed to household income. We are able to give loan modification help and get their lives straight.
